Mahalakshmi Ravishankar is a Bharatanatyam dancer who has been practising the art form from the age of eight, with a strong grounding in technique, rhythm, and expressive storytelling. Her training reflects discipline, aesthetic sensitivity, and a growing maturity in both nritta and abhinaya.
She is a disciple of Guru Smt. Janane Sethunarayanan, whose artistic lineage traces to Kalaimamani Smt. Anitha Guha, as well as Smt. Nithyakalyani Vaidyanathan and Sri K. P. Rakesh. Under this lineage-based guidance, Mahalakshmi has received systematic training in adavus, jatis, repertoire development, and adherence to classical grammar, shaping her clarity of movement, rhythmic precision, and nuanced expression. Her early formal stage presentation was guided by Guru Smt. Archana Mahesh.
Complementing her dance training, Mahalakshmi holds a Diploma in Taalam and Nattuvangam, having trained under Mridanga Vidwan Dr. Shri G. V. Guru Bharadwaj. This specialised exposure has strengthened her laya awareness, rhythmic articulation, and understanding of the structural framework of Bharatanatyam.
Her performances are characterised by clean lines, confident execution, and an earnest approach to abhinaya, enabling her to engage meaningfully with both devotional and narrative compositions. In addition to solo and group presentations, she has performed key roles in Nritya Natakams, gaining experience in characterisation, ensemble coordination, and narrative interpretation.
Mahalakshmi has performed at various temples and sabhas, particularly during the Margazhi and Navaratri seasons, and has presented her art at venues such as Raj Bhavan, Madurai Tamil Isai Sangam, and several Natyanjali festivals, gaining valuable stage experience across diverse performance settings.
She is also the founder of Shantha Arts, a dance institution dedicated to nurturing and promoting the classical art of Bharatanatyam through focused training and performance-oriented learning. Her continued pursuit of the art reflects a commitment to preserving classical values while steadily refining her interpretative and rhythmic skills.
